Absorbable Oxidized Cellulose Hemostats

GELITA-CEL® is GELITA MEDICAL’s superior range of proven natural and safe hemostats made of 100% biodegradable organic oxidized cellulose extracted from natural alpha grade cotton. Completely biodegradable, organic GELITA-CEL® can be left in place, ensuring patient comfort while reducing the risk of encapsulation. Depending on the method of use and the operation site, GELITA-CEL® is completely biodegraded in less than four weeks.

GELITA-CEL® products induce hemostasis by providing a strong matrix for platelet adhesion and aggregation. This accelerates the formation of a platelet plug and acts as a catalyst in forming a fibrin clot. The product’s low pH causes localized vasoconstriction, further enhancing the hemostatic effect. In addition the low pH exhibits antibacterial properties, minimizing the risk of infection.

In fig. 1 a microscopic view of the oxidized regenerated cellulose is shown and in fig. 2 a microscopic view of the oxidized cellulose gauze structure of GELITA-CEL® STANDARD. There is an obvious difference between the artificial smooth viscose and the natural alpha grade cotton used by GELITA MEDICAL. The natural cotton has an increased surface due to the irregular natural structure of the cotton fibers. Large contact fibre diameter provides higher interaction of GELITA-CEL® with blood absorption, and the added benefit of larger intra-fibre openings secure delicate balance of blood saturation in gauze resulting in accelerated hemostasis.

 

Antibacterial Properties

 

The GELITA-CEL® product range of STANDARD, FIBRILLAR and X-SORB variants has demonstrated significant antibacterial efficacy against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. In vitro investigations confirmed a statistically significant reduction in the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA, VRE, MRSE and PRSP by more than 99%. Investigations were performed on more than 30 bacterial strains including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus Pseudumonas, Klebsiella, E. coli, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Stenotrophomonas, Proteus, Salmonella and others. Overall, the results have proven a clear antibacterial effect of the GELITA-CEL® products on a wide range of bacteria1.
